TASTING NOTES
This Kabinett 2022 Riesling from Rheingau is very lively, with a range of aromas of white peach, white currant and spring flowers. The balance between the restrained sweetness of the grapes and the crisp acidity is excellent. Very clean wet stone finish. Rich and seductive, this wine is perfect in combination with highly aromatic or spicy dishes, but also ideal to be enjoyed on its own. To drink or to hold. This vintage was characterised by a summer with high temperatures and little rain. 2022 began with a very warm winter and rainfall that helped replenish the water reserves in the soil. A cold spell in April slowed down plant development, leading to bud breakage on 20 April, right in line with the historical average. Nature immediately showed its preference for high temperatures, abundant sunshine and abundant water in the soil, accelerating growth to flowering in early June, about a week earlier than historically expected. With the arrival of the drought, the vineyards slowed down again, despite record temperatures and Mediterranean levels of sunshine. Therefore, the pace of vineyard development remained moderate throughout the summer. On 6 August, the ripening threshold was exceeded on a reference plot, and the harvest began on 20 September, respectively ten days earlier than the historical average. This natural brake on assimilation is bound to become increasingly important for the quality of the grapes and the wine produced from them. As global warming imposes an increasing scarcity of water, work must continue to be concentrated on preparing the vines in the countryside so that they are thirsty but never completely dry out. The Kiedrich hillsides help the vines a lot as they can draw on the water reserves of the forests above them during the increasingly dry and hot years. By mid-September, the grapes looked fantastic and tasted even better. Then came the rains. To our great relief, the Kiedrich hillsides once again showed the extraordinary drainage quality of the phyllite soils. The water flowed naturally and thanks to the meticulous work of Rober Weil's team throughout the year, which laid the foundations for loose clusters and strong air circulation in the vineyards, keeping the fruit completely healthy and on the vine until it reached physiological ripeness. Both grape quality and sensory analysis of the must and young wines indicate an exceptional vintage, from the estate's gutsriesling to the village's ortsriesling and the erste and grosse lagen wines of the individual sites.
