In Campania, the wine-growing tradition is very old and dates back to Greek times. The region as a whole now boasts 15 DOC and 4 DOCG, as well as 10 IGP. Campania's DOCGs (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) are: Taurasi, Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino and Aglianico del Taburno. The Fiano di Avellino DOCG designation of origin is reserved for wines made from grapes of the Fiano vine variety, produced in the designated area, north of Avellino, which extends to the borders of the province of Benevento. This territory takes the form of a very irregular plateau, the so-called Altopiano Irpino, cut by valleys and dotted with reliefs, between which numerous rivers and streams meander. Fiano di Avellino DOCG wines express their territoriality by identifying four distinct zones (or terroirs) of choice where the varietal characteristics of the Fiano vine express a common thread, with peculiar accents and nuances depending on altimetry, exposure and soil composition. In Lapio, the heart of historic Fiano production, the wines are rich in structure and express uncommon qualities of acidity and minerality, not infrequently resembling true mountain wines.
