Emilia-Romagna is one of the main Italian wine regions as an extension thanks to the approximately 60,000 hectares available for cultivation. Of these, only 20% -25% are located in the hills. The area that produces the best still red wines is Romagna, and red wine in Romagna means Sangiovese di Romagna: this wine was the first red in Emilia-Romagna to earn the Denomination of Controlled Origin (DOC). If Sangiovese di Romagna undergoes a maturation of at least two years it can use the indication "riserva" while if it was produced in the hills considered the best of the denomination it can use the indication "superiore". In Emilia-Romagna international grapes are also grown, such as Riesling Renano, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon with the denomination of Typical Geographic Indication (IGT).
