Emilia-Romagna is one of the main Italian wine regions as an extension thanks to its approximately 60,000 hectares that are coultivated. Of all these, only 20% -25% are located on hills. The area that produces the best still red wines is Romagna, and red wine in Romagna means Sangiovese di Romagna: this wine was the first red in Emilia-Romagna to earn the Denomination of Controlled Origin (DOC). If Sangiovese di Romagna undergoes a maturation of at least two years, it can be used the mention "riserva" while if it was produced on the hills considered the best part of the denomination it can be used the mention "superiore". In Emilia-Romagna are also grown international grapes, such as Riesling Renano, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon with the denomination of Typical Geographic Indication (IGT).
