The Lazio region in central Italy has a long and distinguished history in winemaking, with 18,000 hectares of vineyards producing an average of 0.8 million hectolitres of wine per year. The majority of production is white wine (75%), with the remainder being red. The wines of Lazio are distinguished by the use of indigenous grape varieties that have been cultivated for centuries. The region boasts 94 different grape varieties, with Trebbiano and Malvasia being the main ones used for white wine production, resulting in light and fruity wines. The primary red grape variety is Cesanese, renowned for its cherry and spice aromas. The Colli Albani area, located in the province of Velletri, is one of the most renowned wine-producing regions in Lazio. Lazio producers have been prioritising quality enhancement, including the adoption of organic farming techniques. There has also been a rise in the popularity of "Super Lazio" wines, crafted from French grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The volcanic soil in the Colli Albani vineyards imparts distinctive characteristics to the wines.
