The wine region of Trentino, part of the Trentino-Alto Adige, is renowned for its variety of high-quality wines, particularly for the sparkling wines produced using the traditional method, known as Trentodoc. This area is characterised by a favourable alpine climate, with significant temperature fluctuations that contribute to the development of aromatic and complex grapes. The vineyards of Trentino primarily extend across the hilly areas surrounding Trento, at altitudes ranging from 200 to 800 metres. The geoclimatic conditions, featuring sunny days and cool nights, create an ideal habitat for cultivating grapes intended for the production of high-quality sparkling wines. The well-drained, limestone-rich soils are particularly suited for grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, and Meunier, which are the main varieties used for Trentodoc. Trentodoc is considered one of Italy's finest sparkling wines, appreciated for its elegance and persistence. The production involves a secondary fermentation in the bottle followed by an extended ageing on the lees, which imparts an elegant structure and fine perlage to the wines. In addition to the grape varieties used for Trentodoc, Trentino is also known for producing red wines such as Teroldego, Marzemino, Lagrein, and Pinot Noir, which stand out for their unique organoleptic characteristics.
