From steep coastlines to grassy pastures, redwood forests to tranquil valleys, sonoma's coastline is extraordinarily beautiful and, perhaps not by chance, ideal for winemaking. Sonoma Countyis one of nine counties in the San Francisco Bay Area in the United States, and its county seat is Santa Rosa. Sonoma County is the southwest of the Wine Country of California, which also includes Napa, Mendocino, and Lake counties.
This is subdivided into 13 American Viticultural Area and has more than 250 wineries. A rich and varied topography that extends from the coastal side of the county, to the mouth of the Russian River, and is considered one of the best wine-growing areas for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
The terrain is varied, shaped by plate tectonics, volcanic activity to erosion, alternating alluvial and clayey areas with rocky hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean, where whales make their way. Fog plays an important role in this area, swept by cold sea breezes and strong thermal excursion. All this creates complexity and texture to Sonoma Coast wines.
