Known for its temperate climate thanks to the presence of the ocean, the Mendocino wine region ranges from soft coastal hills to vineyards surrounded by mighty redwoods. It is not only beautiful from a naturalistic point of view, it is also extremely cutting-edge. For years Mendocino County has provided affordable grapes for the southern sisters, Napa, and Sonoma. Now this region is defining its own identity. Consisting of 13 American wine-growing areas (AVA), Mendocino County boasts the highest percentage of certified organic and biodynamic grapes in the nation. A northern outpost of the California wine area, Mendocino enjoys a particularly warm climate: the area is in fact sheltered from the cold ocean currents thanks to the high coastal hills that border the region. If the microclimate facilitates the cultivation of black grapes, that of white grapes is not recommended precisely because of the excessive temperature that would penalise them in freshness. The grapes have a high degree of ripening and therefore a good sugar content, while the acidity is quite low making the wines unsuitable for long aging. Zinfandel is the prince of vines in this wine-growing area, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Petit Syrah. Recent studies have confirmed the same strain belonging to the Californian Zinfandel and the Primitivo vine grown in Puglia and southern Italy. The relationship between the two vines has meant that at European level it is indifferent to indicate, on the label of the wines produced by these grapes, the Californian name rather than the Italian one. The town of Mendocino of the same name is famous for fans of The Lady in Yellow, where the series was filmed, and Blair House is jessica fletcher's Cabot Cove home.
