TASTING NOTES
The Clos de la Roche is a prestigious grand cru vineyard located in Morey-Saint-Denis, in the renowned Côte d'Or wine region. Along the Route des Grands Crus D122, it covers a total area of 16.9 hectares, making it twice as large as the neighbouring Clos Saint-Denis. This terroir was recognised by the National Institute of Certified Appellations in 1971, with a surface area of 16.9027 hectares, divided between 30 estates, including the Lignier estate, which cultivates 1.05 hectares of this vineyard. The grapes are cultivated with attention to the characteristics of the vine and the soil, which has a composition of clayey limestone with a rocky base. Guyot pruning is the technique used to care for the vines. Harvesting is done manually, with careful selection of whole bunches ranging from 10 to 30%, depending on the characteristics of the vintage. After a 3-5 day cold maceration, fermentation with indigenous yeasts follows for 4-5 days, ensuring the creation of a high quality wine. The vinification process includes maturation in 228-litre oak barrels, 25% of which are new, for 18 months. During this period, two racking operations are carried out to eliminate the lees and ensure a well-balanced wine. The wine, unfiltered, undergoes malolactic fermentation in the traditional way with native bacteria. Clos de la Roche is a deep red wine with a fruity bouquet reminiscent of walnuts and violets, accentuated by notes of wood and cherries. This Grand Cru is famous for being the richest wine from Morey-Saint-Denis, with exceptionally rustic tannins that give it exceptional ageing potential. Thanks to its unique maturation conditions, Clos de la Roche has exceptional ageing potential and can be kept in the cellar for up to twenty-five years without any loss of quality. A minimum of ten years in the bottle after harvest is recommended to fully enhance its qualities.
