TASTING NOTES
The famous Clos de Vougeot vineyard, planted in 1109 by the monks of Citeaux Abbey, is a very prestigious Burgundy icon. Famous for its magnificent château, it is the largest Grand Cru in the Côte de Nuits. The Clos de Vougeot appellation is shared by 80 owners who cultivate around 51 hectares of vineyards. The grapes used for this wine come from two different plots: one to the west, called 'Les Petits Maupertuis', and the other to the north, called 'Les Dix Journaux'. These two areas are characterised by shallow limestone soils and deeper clay soils. The Pinot Noir grapes are harvested and selected by hand twice, once in the vineyard and once in the cellar. The wine is made using traditional methods. The wine is aged for 18 months, 40% of which in oak barrels from the forests of the Chatillon region. The 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has an intense dark red colour. On the nose, it has a bold, masculine bouquet of oak, musk, cedar, frankincense, pepper and cloves, with elegant floral notes of violet and fruity notes of juniper and blueberry, enriched by subtle hints of Amsterdam tobacco and tree bark. On the palate, the initial freshness is powerful, followed by a dense and robust flavour profile. Subtle earthy notes emerge, accompanied by flavours of juicy fruit and cherries, culminating in a fresh peppermint note. An extraordinarily powerful wine that expresses refinement, finesse and excellent balance, with a rich finish enriched by a light salty note and accents of orange peel and liquorice.
