The historic Steinmetz family, not originally from the region, moved to Brauneberg in 1930, where they established various businesses. In 1950, after the death of his father, Gunther decided to sell everything except the wine cellar. In 1978, Stefan Steinmetz was born. At the age of 21, he decided to relaunch the winery, following his father's traditional approach but with a more natural touch in viticulture and winemaking. Today, the company owns 13 hectares of land in the Central Mosel, divided into 60 separate plots, 94% of which are on steep slopes that can only be worked by hand. Stefan places great emphasis on the concept of terroir in his oenological approach, considering it almost an obsession and stating that his wines must be authentic and represent themselves rather than please everyone. Brauneberg in the Mosel is considered the sanctuary of Riesling, and the history of the Steinmetz winery is inextricably linked to this renowned wine region. For decades, the family has dedicated itself to the production of classic Riesling wines, favouring ripe and dry or semi-dry grapes, in contrast to the region's tendency to promote sweet wines. The harvests in Mosel are late and the long and natural spontaneous fermentations give Stefan's wines great complexity and a unique character. Vinification is spontaneous and is completed with malolactic fermentation. Stefan reads the terroir with extreme precision, adapting the vinification in wooden or steel barrels according to the characteristics of the soil, giving his wines authenticity and personality.
