TASTING NOTES
Le Ponnant is an Aop Côtes du Rhône Villages made from Grenache and Syrah grapes from the best areas of the southern Côtes du Rhône, specifically the villages of Courthézon, Gigondas and Rasteau. The vineyards are cultivated on rocky terrain and the hot, arid climate is influenced by the powerful mistral winds. The grapes are harvested by hand when fully ripe, destemmed and then fermented in contact with the skins in stainless steel vats for about 6-8 weeks at a controlled temperature of 22/28°C. Ageing takes place for at least 8 months in traditional cement vats for the Grenache, while the Syrah is matured in 600 litre oak barrels to emphasise the spicy flavours and minerality of the soil. The wine is natural and unfiltered, so it may have sediment deposits. In the glass, Le Ponnant has a deep red colour and offers notes of ripe fruit, black cherry, conifers, olives and black liquorice. The aroma is enriched by touches of bay leaf and pepper. In the mouth, the sweetness of the fruit and the tannins blend with the freshness of the area, giving a sensation of finesse and elegance.
