TASTING NOTES
Here is a terrific new wine from Donna Olimpia 1898. The 2016 Orizzonte is a pure expression of Petit Verdot with very pretty balance and elegance. With fruit sourced from sandy limestone soils, the bouquet offers just a hint of nice evolution and some aged character. Dark fruit and dried blackberry cede to maraschino cherry and plum cake. There is a healthy dose of spice and smoke at the back, but it remains relegated to a supportive role. The wine ages in French oak for two years. The 2016 vintage is a limited release of 1,900 bottles, a pleasant surprise characterized by its razor-sharp focus. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature, with the cap emerging with daily pumping over, and then continuing with the cap submerged in order to facilitate the extraction of color and aromas, prolonging the maceration for a few days. Malolactic fermentation takes place immediately after alcoholic fermentation. Aging is 24 months in French oak barrels (50% new, 50% one year) and 12 months in bottle.
ORIGIN OF THE NAME
Just as without land no new seed germinates, without past the future does not flourish. Look back, look forward. Look over your shoulder, look at the horizon. A double look even more felt by those who have left, by force or by choice, something important behind them. Setting out on a journey to a new horizon.
