TASTING NOTES
The Meursault Le Village 2022 by Edouard Delaunay is a white wine produced in the prestigious Meursault region, located in the heart of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. This wine is crafted exclusively from 100% Chardonnay grapes and represents one of the finest expressions of white wines from this area. The 2022 vintage was marked by variable climatic conditions, including a hot and dry summer that influenced grape ripening. However, Meursault vineyards, with their advantageous location and limestone-clay soils, benefited from good acidity and structure, resulting in balanced and complex wines. The vineyards are situated northeast of the village, characterised by moderate slopes, shallow stony soils, and a northeast exposure. These conditions provide the wines with excellent ageing potential and unique complexity. Chardonnay is the principal grape variety used in Meursault. Renowned for its versatility, it reflects the characteristics of the terroir where it grows. In Meursault, Chardonnay exhibits notes of fruit, flowers, and spices, enriched by barrel ageing that imparts nuances of vanilla and brioche. The wine displays an intense straw-yellow colour. On the nose, aromas of honey, yeast, hazelnut, and vanilla are complemented by fresh notes of verbena and citrus. On the palate, it is opulent with good acidity, hints of vanilla and brown sugar, and a fresh mineral finish. The aromatic profile also includes floral notes such as spring flowers, almond, and fresh hazelnut. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in barrels for approximately two months. Subsequently, the wine undergoes lees stirring based on tasting observations. Ageing lasts 14 months—12 months on the lees without racking followed by two months in tanks. The wine is aged entirely in oak barrels, with 25% new barrels. Edouard Delaunay is a highly respected producer in Burgundy, known for his meticulous attention to detail and ability to showcase the essence of the terroir from which the grapes originate. The winery employs traditional winemaking techniques such as barrel ageing to create complex and refined wines. Maison Edouard Delaunay boasts a rich history dating back to the late 19th century and was restored to its former glory by Laurent Delaunay in 2017.
