GRAPE VARIETY
Nerello Mascalese 100%
TASTING NOTES
The Nerello Mascalese is a Sicilian grape variety that is grown on Mount Etna, an active volcano on the east coast of the island. It produces elegant and complex red wines with aromas of red fruits and spices, soft tannins, and fresh acidity. Nerello Mascalese wines have a robust structure and can age gracefully, gaining complexity and depth over time. This particular Nerello Mascalese from Ballasanti Estates is grown at an altitude of approximately 600 metres on the slopes of Etna in the San Basilio district of Piedimonte Etneo. The volcanic soil is permeable, rich in potassium and iron, but poor in nitrogen and assimilable phosphorous. The grapes are sourced from a century-old vineyard with vines trained as single, three-branch trees. Harvesting occurs during the last ten days of September when the grapes are fully ripe. They are hand-picked into baskets and then taken to the cellar for vinification. Alcoholic fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel wine vats, allowing for prolonged skin contact with the must. Malolactic fermentation takes place immediately after alcoholic fermentation in wooden barrels. Maturation occurs in both ceramic vats and French oak tonneaux, followed by at least 6 months in the bottle. The wine displays a brilliant deep colour with garnet hues. The aroma of currants and black pepper is delicately balanced against a slightly rustic, vanilla background. The taste is captivating, with a strong tannic backbone.
