TASTING NOTES
Carlo Boscaini's winery is located in the hamlet of S. Ambrogio di Valpolicella, in what is known as the classic, and therefore oldest, area for the production of Amarone. The 2017 vintage in this area was characterised by warm conditions and little rain, starting in the winter season. The weather remained warm from June to August, with some periods of drought. September saw thunderstorms and an abrupt cooling, which deviated from the usual temperature range. Despite the difficult climate, the vines in the production area coped well with the stress. The phenomena occurred earlier than in previous years: The buds appeared at the end of March and the flowers bloomed a few days earlier than usual. The veraison (ripening) was average, having occurred on 5 August. The warm weather in August accelerated the ripening of the grapes, causing the Corvina harvest to begin in the first week of September, 10 days earlier than last year. Sugar levels and total acidity were higher, while malic acid content was lower, indicating the hot vintage. The warm, dry weather also prevented the development of diseases such as downy mildew and botrytis. The Amarone San Giorgio 2017 is a deep wine with great extract. A lively, intense red with vigorous tannins of good maturity. With an important alcohol component, and crisp, intense and penetrating fruit aromas. An exceptional vintage of Amarone della Valpolicella: great character and excellent evolutionary potential, deservedly among the best vintages of Amarone della Valpolicella. It is an excellent accompaniment to structured dishes such as roast meats, game, mature cheeses and braised meats. It should be served at room temperature, better if placed in a carafe and decanted a few hours beforehand. The Magnum bottle with its wooden case makes a perfect gift.
