TASTING NOTES
The Champagne Charles Heidsieck Brut Millésimé 2018 is a refined and powerful expression of the Champagne house's philosophy, combining depth and elegance in perfect harmony. This vintage champagne embodies the essence of a year that, despite climatic challenges, delivered grapes of excellent quality and maturity. The 2018 vintage presented challenging yet ultimately rewarding weather conditions for Charles Heidsieck. Despite abundant rainfall and stormy weather in the spring, followed by a hot, dry summer, the vines thrived. Maturation progressed rapidly, and the harvested grapes were healthy, with minimal rot and in excellent condition. High yields allowed growers to replenish reserves after a difficult 2017, and the resulting wines proved to be fresh, fruity, and elegant. This champagne results from a careful selection of grapes primarily from Grand and Premier Cru vineyards. The main crus used include Ambonnay, Tauxières, Vertus, Bouzy, Verzy and Trigny, each contributing its unique characteristics to the final blend. The Brut Millésimé 2018 comprises 55% Pinot Noir and 45% Chardonnay. This combination gives the wine a powerful structure and elegant finesse. After vinification, the Champagne rested for 5 years on its lees in the characteristic crayères, the ancient chalk cellars of Charles Heidsieck, developing complexity and aromatic depth. The wines underwent malolactic fermentation to soften the natural acidity and improve texture. The wine presents a splendid golden colour, embellished with greenish reflections and a delicate, persistent effervescence. The nose is intense and complex, with initial notes of toast and smokiness blending with hints of ripe fruit. With aeration, touches of apricot and vineyard peach emerge, attesting to the aromatic concentration due to the summer heatwaves. The attack is decisive and taut, followed by a creamy texture that reveals the freshness of the fruit and spicy notes of cinnamon, liquorice, and pepper, characteristic of the house style1. The palate is mineral and taut, with excellent freshness. Notes of quince, vanilla, and vineyard peach are perceived in the mid-palate, followed by a decisive and crisp finish. This Champagne lends itself to diverse gastronomic pairings. It is particularly well-suited to dishes such as Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe, Suea Rong Hai (also known as "crying tiger" beef), or seared mackerel with tomatoes, thyme, and rosemary. Its structure and complexity also make it an excellent companion for smoked dishes such as smoked eel or smoked Scamorza. Charles Heidsieck, the house's founder, was known as "Champagne Charlie" for his pioneering spirit and charisma. In 1851, at only 29 years old, he decided to create his Champagne house, forging a unique path despite coming from one of the most respected families in the Champagne world. In conclusion, the Charles Heidsieck Brut Millésimé 2018 is a Champagne that perfectly embodies the house's style: powerful yet refined, with a vibrant freshness and great ageing potential. It is a wine that will evolve magnificently over time, developing further complexity and generosity.
