TASTING NOTES
Sirio 2024 by Colle di Maggio is a white wine produced by the renowned winery Colle di Maggio, located in Velletri, in the heart of the Castelli Romani in Lazio. This often underrated region in the Italian wine landscape offers a unique volcanic terroir, derived from the Alban Hills complex, which imparts a distinctive minerality and complexity to the wines. The 2024 vintage, although not yet reviewed in detail, follows in the tradition of Colle di Maggio, which focuses on quality and innovation. The estate is known for its use of organic techniques and its attention to art and beauty, reflected in the wine labels as well. The production area, Velletri, is situated approximately 40 km from Rome and benefits from a mild Mediterranean microclimate, ideal for vine cultivation. The soil, predominantly clay and sand, provides a fertile substrate for white grape varieties such as Chardonnay and Bombino, used for Sirio. Sirio is a blend of Chardonnay and Bombino, two varieties that adapt perfectly to the area's soil and climate. Chardonnay lends structure and complexity, whilst Bombino adds freshness and fruitiness. The grapes, carefully selected in the vineyard, are hand-harvested in early September. After a brief cooling period, they are destemmed and gently pressed. The resulting must ferments in temperature-controlled steel tanks. Following fermentation, the wines rest on their 'noble' lees for at least 8 months, followed by a further 6 months of bottle ageing. Visually, Sirio presents a bright straw yellow colour, enhanced by greenish reflections that highlight its youthful vitality. On the nose, it offers a broad and inviting olfactory profile, with fresh notes of Golden Delicious apple, ripe banana, and a delicate scent of white flowers, creating a balanced floral and fruity bouquet. On the palate, the wine distinguishes itself with its freshness and elegance, with a refined structure thanks to the combination of Chardonnay and Bombino grapes. Colle di Maggio was awarded at the "Bere Bene 2024" by Gambero Rosso for its excellent quality at accessible prices. The estate is also known for its collaboration with local artists for wine labels, creating a perfect union between art and wine.
