This Predappio Riserva Sangiovese is crafted from a historic single vineyard (cru) of just 2.98 hectares, located in one of the most prestigious areas for producing structured and long-lived red wines. The 2021 vintage benefits from a balanced climate with significant diurnal temperature variations, ideal for the perfect ripening of Sangiovese grapes. This results in wines with remarkable freshness, ripe tannins, and an intense, complex aromatic profile. Predappio’s soils, rich in clay and marl, lend elegance, structure, and pronounced minerality to the Sangiovese, while the altitude and local microclimate enhance freshness and aromatic complexity, contributing to the longevity and refinement of the wines. Compared to other Italian regions, Romagna’s Sangiovese is distinguished by greater freshness and a more elegant tannic structure. Selecting the finest grapes from the “Vigna del Pruno” vineyard allows the production of a wine with great personality, regarded as a benchmark within the denomination. The vinification process involves controlled-temperature fermentation in stainless steel tanks, with extended maceration on the skins for 18-20 days. Malolactic fermentation takes place both in stainless steel and French oak barriques. The wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak barriques and tonneaux, followed by bottle maturation. It is bottled unfiltered to preserve its full character. In appearance, the wine shows a bright ruby garnet hue with violet reflections, vivid and luminous. The nose reveals intense aromas of ripe red fruit, vanilla, cinnamon, and sweet wood notes, complemented by balsamic and undergrowth hints that add depth. On the palate, it is broad, dense, and crisp, with refined, well-integrated tannins. The freshness is sustained, and the long, persistent finish recalls fruit, spices, and a pleasant mineral note. Drei Donà is a historic family estate in Romagna, among the first to adopt organic and sustainable farming practices. The name “Vigna del Pruno” is inspired by a Maremma horse from the family’s stable, symbolising strength and reliability, much like the wine itself. The 2021 vintage has earned a prestigious score of 92/100 from Falstaff, confirming it as one of the finest expressions of Romagna Sangiovese. The Tenuta La Palazza was built between the cities of Forlì and Predappio in a strategic position between the valleys of the Montone and Rabbi rivers, around one of the watchtowers that Caterina Sforza ordered to build to defend her possessions. The estate, owned by the Counts Drei Donà since 1923, has always been dedicated to the production of Sangiovese grapes. The company underwent a radical transformation in 1979, when Claudio Drei Donà took over the management, together with his son Enrico. Of the 23 hectares cultivated under organic farming, the majority is dedicated to the Sangiovese vineyards from which the classic Predappio Doc "Notturno" and the Riserva "Vigna del Pruno ” are produced. The futurist vision of Count Claudio also gave birth to "Il Tornese" , the first great white wine from international grapes in Romagna and the red "Magnificat" , a "single vineyard" from the first Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard planted in this region. The particular names of the wines deserve a mention: in fact, they were baptized with the names of the horses of the small family breeding farm.
