TASTING NOTES
The Pichler-Krutzler Dürnstein Grüner Veltliner 2023 is a white wine that represents an excellent expression of the Grüner Veltliner grape, typical of the Wachau region in Austria. The grapes come from vineyards in the municipality of Dürnstein, known for its favorable climate and mineral-rich soils. The 2023 vintage benefited from variable but favorable weather conditions, with spring rains providing adequate hydration for the vines, followed by a warm summer that accelerated grape ripening. The year began with cool, humid weather, delaying bud break. From mid-May, sunny weather promoted vigorous vine growth. However, a hailstorm at the end of August damaged some grapes, but dry conditions allowed for the removal of affected berries during harvest. Harvesting began in the second week of September in the eastern Wachau, with noticeable differences in ripening among vineyards. In the western part, ripening was delayed, leading to a conclusion of harvesting in Spitz only at the beginning of November. Despite climatic challenges, expectations for wine quality are high, with predictions of expressive and well-balanced white wines. The wine displays a bright straw-yellow color, indicating freshness and vivacity. On the nose, it offers a complex and captivating aromatic bouquet with notes of fresh fruit such as green apple and pear, complemented by floral hints and herbal nuances. The typical minerality of the Wachau terroir enriches the olfactory experience. On the palate, the wine is fresh and lively, with good acidity that balances the natural sweetness of the grapes. It has a medium body and well-defined structure, making it pleasant and easy to drink. The finish is long and persistent, featuring a slight peppery note characteristic of Grüner Veltliner. The Pichler-Krutzler Dürnstein Grüner Veltliner 2023 pairs beautifully with seafood dishes, shellfish, and Asian cuisine due to its freshness and aromatic complexity.
