TASTING NOTES
The Dürnsteiner Kellerberg represents an example of viticultural excellence in the Wachau region. The vines, meticulously tended by hand, are cultivated on south-east facing terraces supported by natural stone walls. The soil is characterised by the presence of Orthogneiss, a metamorphic rock that contributes to the mineral quality of the wines. Thanks to the cool air currents that develop during the nights, the growing period is extended, allowing for a late harvest. This combination of microclimatic factors produces wines that uniquely blend refinement and power. The vines, with an average age of 35 years, are hand-harvested towards the end of October. Fermentation and maturation occur over 8-9 months, partly in stainless steel and partly in large oak barrels of 12-15 hl. The 2022 vintage brought favourable climatic conditions for grape ripening, resulting in wines with good acidity and superior aromatic complexity. Warm summers allowed the grapes to reach perfect ripeness, while cool nights preserved the necessary acidity for balance. The Pichler-Krutzler Kellerberg Riesling 2022 stands out with its medium greenish-yellow colour and silver reflections. On the nose, it offers a delicate bouquet of floral honey and mango, enriched by notes of orange zest and a characteristic minerality typical of Wachau wines. On the palate, it presents a silky texture with notes of white peach and a fine acidic structure. The salty finish makes this Riesling an ideal companion for meals, thanks to its balance and ageing potential. This wine is not merely a product to be tasted; it is a sensory experience that reflects the unique terroir of Wachau. With its elegant structure and complex aromatic notes, it exemplifies the quality of Austrian Rieslings, making it an excellent choice to accompany fish dishes or white meats, or simply to be enjoyed in good company.
