TASTING NOTES
The Kiedrich Klosterberg Riesling Trocken 2022 is a high-quality white wine from the Rheingau region in Germany, known for its elegance and pronounced minerality. In the glass, it appears a bright straw yellow. On the nose, it reveals fresh aromas of citrus, green apple, and delicate floral notes, enriched by a distinctive minerality. On the palate, it is dry (trocken), with a lively acidity that balances its fruity character, giving freshness and vibrancy. The mineral undertones add complexity and a persistent finish. It pairs perfectly with fish, seafood, salads, and light dishes. The summer of 2022 was marked by high temperatures and scarce rainfall, significantly impacting the phenology of the vineyards. The winter began with mild weather, but the winter rains allowed for the accumulation of essential water reserves for some vineyards. A cold spell in April slowed down vegetative growth, with budbreak occurring around April 20th, in line with the average of previous years. High temperatures and many hours of sunshine, along with good soil moisture, then accelerated growth, with flowering occurring a week earlier than average, in the first days of June. However, the increasing drought triggered the natural mechanisms of slowing down the vines' assimilation processes, despite record temperatures and sunlight from the south. Veraison occurred on August 6th, nine days earlier than the average, while the harvest began on September 20th, ten days ahead of schedule. The quality of the grapes and musts promises an excellent vintage, also thanks to the characteristics of the Kiedricher Berg soil, which ensured optimal drainage after the mid-September rains. The grapes were harvested in excellent sanitary conditions and with good physiological maturity, raising great expectations for all wines, from Gutswein to Grand Cru. Despite the challenges, small quantities of wines from dried grapes were produced, including Trockenbeerenauslese, for the 34th consecutive year. In summary, it was a complex yet high-quality vintage, made possible thanks to the experience, patience, and hard work of the team, in a context of climate change that requires careful management of water resources. Its characteristics are derived from the stony-grainy soil that characterizes the vineyard where the grapes are grown. The steep, southwest-facing slopes are composed of rocks from the Devonian geological period (colored slate) and Pre-Devonian (phyllite and gneiss), interspersed with silty areas. The name Klosterberg (German for "monastery mountain") comes from the ancient path, the so-called Klosterweg ("monastery path"), which crosses the vineyards and connects the old Cistercian abbey of Kloster Eberbach to the village of Kiedrich.
