Cannonau - Also known as Grenache
TASTING NOTES
This Cannonau, also known as Grenache or Granacha, grows in stony soils buffeted by the wind. The 2021 vintage was characterised by a quantitative decrease of around 15% due to an unexpected frost in April. The winter was rainy, allowing for significant water reserves to accumulate. The growing cycle, initially delayed by a week, caught up in the following months. June and July were marked by a lack of rainfall and high temperatures, conditions that favoured the development of beautiful, healthy grapes. The further absence of rain combined with the high temperatures in August facilitated the full ripening of the grapes, which were then harvested strictly by hand and in crates, healthy and sweet. The winemaking and ageing processes aim not to disrupt or counteract what this splendid grape offers; thus, after fermentation in stainless steel at controlled temperatures, the ageing occurs in stainless steel tanks and in uncharred French oak barrels. Following fermentation in stainless steel at controlled temperatures, there is a six-month maturation in slightly toasted French oak barrels and tonneaux, followed by 18 months in bottle. The Cannonau Riserva 2021 is a deep red with impenetrable violet reflections. On the nose, it greets us with notes of blackberry jam, while on the palate, small red fruits intertwine with hints of leather and spices. The tannins are present but extremely elegant, contributing to this wine's beautiful structure and ample body, characterised by a long persistence. It pairs well with grilled or braised red meats, savoury first courses, and aged cheeses. In July 2021, the winery completed its conversion to organic farming and is now certified.
