What is Crémant?

What is Crémant? The Crémant is a sparkling wine produced with classic method, otherwise known as champenoise method. It can be produced in different areas, in Burgundy, in the Loire, in the Rhone valley and outside the French borders in Luxembourg, but the best quality is found only in one region: the Alsace. In this region the production disciplinary is more rigid: the harvest is only manual and the must must be obtained only by soft pressing of the bunches.

Crémant: characteristics and bottling

It must age at least nine months on the lees and can be marketed at least one year after bottling. It also differs in the pressure developed by the yeasts during fermentation in the bottle: it must be less than five atmospheres . This makes it more delicate, less sparkling and softer than other sparkling wines. To have an Italian term of comparison we can combine it with Franciacorta Satén.

Another peculiarity of Crémant is that in most cases it is a vintage , that is to say that it is produced with wines of the same vintage, and does not have then inside a part of reserve wines, a distinctive feature of the Cremant Gustav Lorenz, which has been producing Crémant in Alsace for 250 years. In fact, Gustave Lorentz produces both vintage and sans année Crémant wines , thus using reserve wines , from his vineyards, all Gran Cru.
