TASTING NOTES
The 2020 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico San Giorgio by Boscaini Carlo is a prestigious red wine, a true expression of the Valpolicella Classica terroir, renowned for its winemaking tradition and the grape drying (appassimento) technique. This vintage stands out due to an ideal climatic balance that enabled optimal ripening, imparting elegance, structure, and significant ageing potential to the wine. The year 2020 featured mild temperatures and a well-balanced climate, without the extremes of heat or drought seen in hotter vintages such as 2017. This allowed the grapes to mature slowly, preserving excellent acidity and balanced sugar levels-key factors for a harmonious and complex Amarone. The classic Valpolicella area, where San Giorgio is produced, is famed for its calcareous and volcanic soils, which contribute mineral notes and finesse to the wines. Here, indigenous grape varieties Corvina, Rondinella, and Corvinone are cultivated and enhanced through the traditional appassimento method, concentrating sugars and aromas to create intense, long-lived wines. Visually, the wine presents a deep ruby red with bright, intense reflections. The nose reveals a complex bouquet of ripe red fruits such as cherry and plum, enriched by spicy hints, tobacco notes, and a delicate vanilla touch from oak ageing. On the palate, it is warm and enveloping, with soft yet firm tannins, good acidity, and a long, persistent finish that highlights the wine’s structure and balance. This Amarone pairs excellently with robust dishes like roasted meats, game, aged cheeses, and braised dishes. It is best served at room temperature and ideally decanted several hours before serving to enhance its aromas and flavours. Boscaini Carlo maintains a strong connection to the Valpolicella Classica territory. The San Giorgio Amarone, made from dried grapes, symbolises the winery’s dedication and passion for quality.
