TASTING NOTES
This Bolgheri Bianco 2022 is a wine made from grapes grown in the vineyards of Donna Olimpia 1898 in Bolgheri. The region is situated on the coastal strip of the Tyrrhenian Sea and has sandy loam soil. The 2022 vintage experienced a dry spell that lasted for most of the summer, but providential thunderstorms in mid-August followed. Despite the initial lack of water, the Bolgheri vines reacted positively and ripened optimally. The harvest started in late August and finished in September. Surprisingly, the wines have moderate alcohol levels, good acidity, extraction, and maintain the typical freshness and elegance of Bolgheri wines. The grapes, which were carefully selected in the vineyard, were immediately brought to the cellar for vinification. After crushing and decanting, the alcoholic fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. After finishing the initial racking, the wine is left to rest on its fine lees (yeasts) for 14 months, with repeated stirring (battonages) to suspend the yeasts deposited on the bottom. Following this extended ageing period, the wine undergoes cold stabilisation and is then bottled. This technique enhances the wine's flavour and ensures a long shelf life. The wine has a bright and lively straw-yellow colour of medium intensity, with aromas of ground ginger, fresh fruit, and flowers. The wine is medium-bodied and has a wet stone character, with notes of crushed garden herbs and green apple. It has a bright and refreshing finish.
ORIGIN OF THE NAME
The name of Donna Olimpia 1898 is in honor of Olimpia Alliata Signora di Biserno and wife of Gherardo della Gherardesca, who baptized the estate in 1898 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of their wedding.
