TASTING NOTES
The 2020 vintage was characterised by favourable climatic conditions, with a growing season that saw an ideal balance between sun and rain. These conditions allowed for uniform grape ripening, contributing to the development of a rich and complex aromatic profile. The harvest took place at the right moment, ensuring high-quality grapes that translate into a wine of great structure and depth. Salice Salentino is primarily produced from Negroamaro grapes, which account for about 80% of the blend, while the remaining 20% comes from Malvasia Nera. Negroamaro is an indigenous grape variety of Puglia, known for its ability to express the local terroir through robust and aromatic wines. This variety adapts perfectly to the calcareous and clayey soils of the region, producing wines with soft tannins and a freshness that balances the structure. The Salice Salentino Riserva Dop Santa Croce 2020 presents itself with an intense ruby red colour, sometimes with garnet reflections. On the nose, it offers a complex bouquet of ripe red fruits, such as cherries and plums, accompanied by spicy notes and hints of wood derived from ageing in French oak barrels for 12 months. On the palate, the wine is velvety and smooth, with good structure and a persistent finish that invites slow enjoyment. This wine pairs perfectly with roasted meat dishes, game, and aged cheeses. It is also ideal for accompanying typical Puglian dishes, such as orecchiette with turnip tops. An interesting fact about Salice Salentino is that this wine received DOC recognition in 1976 and has a long history dating back to the time of Magna Graecia. Its popularity has grown over time, becoming one of the symbols of Puglian viticulture. Additionally, the name "Santa Croce" pays homage to local religious tradition, highlighting the connection between the wine and the culture of the region. The label, as well as the name of this wine, is indeed a tribute to the Basilica di Santa Croce in Lecce, a masterpiece and landmark of Salento Baroque architecture.
