TASTING NOTES
Deeply evocative on the nose, the Bolgheri Rosso 2022 Donna Olimpia stands out for its intense aromas of sweet berries and tobacco, enriched by delicate floral nuances, such as rose. In the mouth, it is full-bodied, with solid, velvety tannins that lead towards a fresh, persistent finish. The story of this vintage reveals a long and significant dry period, which began in the last weeks of winter and continued for most of the summer. However, the turning point came in mid-August with the arrival of a series of salutary storms, decisive for the optimal ripening of the grapes. The local Bolgheri varieties showed extraordinary reactivity, withstanding the initial water shortage while benefiting from the summer rains, thus ensuring optimal ripening, especially for the less precocious varieties. The early harvest, which began around the third week of August and ended at the end of September, surprised with its low alcohol content, balanced acidity and quality extractions, while maintaining the freshness and elegance typical of Bolgheri wines. When fully ripe, between September and October, the grapes are carefully selected and vinified in the cellar. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation to enhance complexity. Ageing in French oak barrels (50% new, 50% one year old) and the resting period in the bottle (six months) give this wine an elegant and refined structure, an authentic expression of the Bolgheri terroir.
ORIGIN OF THE NAME
The name of Donna Olimpia 1898 is in honor of Olimpia Alliata Signora di Biserno and wife of Gherardo della Gherardesca, who baptized the estate in 1898 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of their wedding.
