TASTING NOTES
Basilica del Cortaccio 2020 by Cafaggio is a prestigious wine crafted exclusively from a 4.2-hectare vineyard dedicated entirely to Cabernet Sauvignon, organically cultivated since its first vintage in 1989. Situated at 355 metres above sea level with a south-west exposure, the vineyard’s clay-rich soils impart a complex structure and distinctive personality to the wine, enhancing the varietal’s finest attributes. The 2020 vintage stands out for its exceptional quality, reflecting the Cabernet Sauvignon’s remarkable ability to express the unique terroir of Cafaggio. The climatic conditions that year were ideal: a cold, rainy winter ensured substantial water reserves; a warm, dry spring promoted early flowering; summer featured sunny days without excessive heat, while cool nights preserved the grapes’ natural acidity. A dry autumn during harvest allowed for the picking of healthy, perfectly ripe clusters. Visually, the Basilica del Cortaccio 2020 displays an intense, bright ruby red colour, signalling its richness and concentration. On the nose, it reveals an elegant and complex bouquet, with ripe red fruit aromas such as cherry and currant, complemented by sweet spice, tobacco, and a subtle vanilla note derived from oak ageing. The palate is full-bodied and enveloping, with soft yet well-defined tannins, lively acidity providing freshness, and a long, persistent finish rich in fruity and spicy nuances. The wine achieves a fine balance and finesse, approachable now but with significant ageing potential to evolve and gain complexity over time. This wine is a true enological gem of the Chianti Classico area, thanks to the unique combination of terroir, altitude, vineyard exposure, organic viticulture, and the favourable 2020 vintage conditions. The Cafaggio estate, with a winemaking tradition dating back to 1408, blends ancient methods with modern innovation, maintaining a strong commitment to sustainability and quality, values reflected in every bottle, including Basilica del Cortaccio. Basilica del Cortaccio 2020 is an elegant, characterful Cabernet Sauvignon that authentically expresses the terroir of Cafaggio, ideal for those seeking a richly nuanced wine with notable ageing potential.

Cafaggio Discover Cafaggio in Tuscany and its fine wines in our online store The historic Cafaggio Estate, located in Panzano within the renowned Conca d'Oro area of Chianti, comprises 60 hectares of land. With a long history dating back to 1408, the estate has changed hands over the centuries. Currently owned by ISA S.p.A, a financial company based in Trento since 2016, Cafaggio is dedicated to being a distinguished producer of Chianti Classico wines. The estate comprises 30 hectares of vineyards, 3 hectares of olive groves, and the remaining land is covered with woodland. Previously belonging to various entities, including the Benedictine monks of Siena, the Niccolini family of Florence, and the Florentine Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova, the estate was later renovated and revitalised by the Boddi family in the 19th century and the Farkas family in the 1960s. During the Farkas family's tenure, the cellars were restored and the vineyards and olive groves were given meticulous attention. Cafaggio is committed to continuous improvement and the careful management of the entire production process.
