TASTING NOTES
The Donna Olimpia 1898 Bolgheri Rosso DOC 2023 in a 0.375-litre format offers a unique opportunity to discover or rediscover one of Tuscany’s most esteemed red wines in a more practical and versatile size. This half-bottle is ideal for those wishing to enjoy a high-quality wine without opening a full bottle, perfect for intimate dinners, guided tastings, or simple personal enjoyment. The 2023 vintage in Bolgheri was marked by favourable climatic conditions, with warm summers tempered by sea breezes and significant diurnal temperature variations. These factors promoted optimal grape ripening, preserving the balance between acidity and sugars while maintaining aromatic richness. The resulting wine is fresh, elegant, and well-structured, expressing the Mediterranean character of the terroir at its best. The Bolgheri DOC lies in the Tuscan Maremma, between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the hills of Castagneto Carducci. The alluvial sandy and silty soils, combined with the moderating maritime influence, create ideal conditions for cultivating Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, which compose the blend of this wine. This terroir imparts elegance, freshness, and aromatic complexity. Donna Olimpia 1898 Bolgheri Rosso 2023 is a skilfully crafted blend predominantly of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected to ensure the highest quality. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by ageing in French oak barriques for several months, which adds spicy and vanilla notes without overpowering the fruit’s freshness. Visually, the wine shows an intense, bright ruby red colour with violet reflections highlighting its youth. The nose offers a complex and refined bouquet with ripe red fruit aromas such as blackberry, blackcurrant, and cherry, accompanied by balsamic hints of eucalyptus and myrtle, and delicate vanilla and cocoa nuances from oak ageing. On the palate, it is harmonious and enveloping, with soft, well-integrated tannins, good acidity, and medium to long persistence. The finish is pleasantly spicy and fruity, balanced and inviting a second sip. This wine pairs excellently with red meat dishes such as braised meats, roasts, and game, as well as aged cheeses and traditional Tuscan cuisine. The 0.375-litre format also makes it ideal for sharing a meal for two or for guided tastings. The Donna Olimpia 1898 estate is named after Olimpia Alliata, a noblewoman who gave her name to the estate in 1898 to mark her wedding anniversary. The estate covers approximately 60 hectares within the Bolgheri DOC, a rare privilege that allows it to authentically and consistently express the unique character of the territory
