TASTING NOTES
The Bolgheri Rosso DOC 2023 from Donna Olimpia 1898 is crafted in one of Italy’s most renowned regions for the production of red wines of exceptional elegance and structure: the Bolgheri DOC, located in the Tuscan Maremma between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the hills of Castagneto Carducci. The 2023 vintage, still in its youth, promises wines with a fresh profile and notable aromatic concentration, thanks to the region’s favourable climatic conditions—abundant sunshine, pronounced diurnal temperature variation, and maritime breezes that preserve grape health and aromatic complexity. Bolgheri is celebrated for its unique microclimate, influenced by its proximity to the sea and protected by the surrounding hills. This combination enables perfect ripening of Bordeaux grape varieties, imparting balance between freshness, structure, and aromatic complexity to the wines. The predominantly sandy and silty alluvial soils contribute to the production of wines that are elegant and approachable, yet never lacking in character. Bolgheri Rosso DOC is a blend inspired by the Bordeaux tradition, composed chiefly of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. These varieties are cultivated with low yields to ensure concentration and quality. The grapes are hand-harvested at full ripeness, typically between September and October, and undergo careful selection in the vineyard. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, followed by malolactic fermentation to enhance complexity. Maturation occurs in French oak barriques—50% new and 50% second-use—for 12 to 14 months, with a further six months’ bottle ageing prior to release. The color is deep, vivid ruby red with pronounced purple highlights, reflecting the wine’s youth and vibrancy. The bouquet is broad and precise, offering ripe wild berries such as blueberry, blackcurrant, and blackberry, complemented by subtle vegetal undertones, balsamic nuances of eucalyptus and myrtle, and delicate hints of vanilla and chocolate from French oak maturation. At the palate it's armonious and medium-bodied, with a supple, savoury mouthfeel. The tannins are well-integrated, the persistence is notable, and the finish echoes the fruit and spice notes detected on the nose. The freshness typical of the 2023 vintage makes this wine particularly enjoyable and easy to drink, while retaining impressive depth. Bolgheri Rosso DOC 2023 is an ideal match for red meat dishes, game, or noble poultry. It is also highly recommended with duck à l’orange or mature cheeses. The Donna Olimpia 1898 estate takes its name from Olimpia Alliata, Lady of Biserno, who gave her name to the property in 1898 to mark her 25th wedding anniversary with Gherardo della Gherardesca. The estate covers approximately 60 hectares entirely within the Bolgheri DOC, between the historic Via Aurelia and the inland hills. It represents one of the region’s most dynamic projects, established by Guido Folonari, heir to one of Italy’s most prominent wine families. Notably, Donna Olimpia 1898 is among the few estates with all its vineyards located within the Bolgheri DOC, ensuring a profound connection to the terroir and the ability to fully express the unique characteristics of this extraordinary region. Why Choose Bolgheri Rosso DOC 2023 Donna Olimpia 1898? If you are seeking an elegant, modern Tuscan red with a Mediterranean character, Bolgheri Rosso DOC 2023 from Donna Olimpia 1898 is the perfect choice.
