TASTING NOTES
The Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Altenberg de Bergheim 2016 by Gustave Lorentz is an exceptional wine that magnificently expresses the rich terroir of Alsace. The Gewurztraminer grapes come from organic vineyards located in the prestigious Grand Cru site of Altenberg de Bergheim, known for producing high-quality wines since the end of the 13th century. The soils, composed of clay and limestone, host vines that are aged between 30 and 50 years. The 2016 vintage is considered one of the best in Alsace, thanks to ideal climatic conditions that allowed for the perfect ripening of the Gewurztraminer grapes, resulting in a wine of extraordinary balance and complexity. On the nose, it presents such an intense aromatic richness that it becomes difficult to detach oneself from the glass. Notes of honeyed turmeric cream, saffron, and the warm golden light of sunset can be perceived. These are complemented by hints of white pepper intertwined with lychee, cumin seeds, rose oil, and pink peppercorns. The complexity is astounding: citrus notes, such as those of Seville orange and kumquat, harmoniously blend with the wine's sweetness, creating a joyful and layered tasting experience. The finish is broad and enveloping, almost like an origami unfolding in a study of gold. Designed to age beautifully, the Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Altenberg de Bergheim 2016 will continue to evolve positively in the coming years. Its ability to further develop aromatic complexity makes it a fascinating wine to follow over time.
