TASTING NOTES
The Pinot Gris Grand Cru Altenberg de Bergheim is sourced from the estate's oldest vineyards, which are between 30 and 50 years old. These are located on the hills surrounding the village of Bergheim. The soil has a very pronounced mineral profile, as well as a geological variety that has developed in the course of natural phenomena throughout history. The 2016 grape harvest in Altenberg de Bergheim in the Alsace region was characterised by favourable climatic conditions that allowed the grapes to ripen well. Temperatures during the harvest period were mild and stable, with sunny days contributing to the concentration of sugars in the grapes. This resulted in a harvest of grapes of excellent quality, with a good balance of sugars and acidity. The winegrowers were able to harvest optimally, selecting the best grapes and ensuring a high vineyard yield. Thanks to modern technology and a passion for viticulture, it was possible to produce high-quality wines with intense and complex aromas and a good structure in the mouth. The grapes, once hand-picked and pressed whole, undergo a very slow fermentation, thanks to indigenous yeasts, in large oak barrels. Subsequently, the wine is matured on the fine lees for 12 months in large oak barrels. The resulting wine is an intense, bright golden yellow in colour. On the nose, it has a thick, creamy aroma with notes of maple syrup and mascarpone cheese. Candied lemon peel, clementines, toffee and a long strand of citrus bitterness. Not dry on the palate, silky and almost lazy in its sensual seductiveness. Hard to resist. Great ageing potential.
