TASTING NOTES
The Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2020 from Poggio Antico stands out for its elegance and complexity, perfectly representing the characteristics of the Montalcino territory and the Sangiovese grape. The 2020 vintage was marked by a warm climate, but thanks to careful vineyard management, wines with good structure and finesse were produced. The Brunello di Montalcino from this year ranks among the best in recent times, with an average quality that approaches that of exceptional vintages like 2015 and 2016. The wines from 2020 exhibit a balance between power and freshness. Poggio Antico is located in the highest hills of Montalcino, at over 500 meters above sea level. This altitude imparts a unique freshness to the wine, aided by the influence of the Tyrrhenian Sea, which provides constant ventilation that mitigates humidity and high temperatures. The estate is divided into micro-terroirs that enhance the area's soil diversity, contributing to the creation of distinctive and complex wines. Brunello di Montalcino is produced exclusively from Sangiovese grapes, an indigenous variety known for its ability to express the terroir. The Sangiovese of Poggio Antico is noted for its elegance, refined tannins, and lively freshness, making the wine agile despite its structural significance. This wine presents itself with an intense and luminous ruby red colour. On the nose, one can perceive complex aromas of berries, tobacco, and a slight menthol note, accompanied by balsamic and floral hints. The palate is broad and substantial, with well-defined tannins that fade slowly. The lively freshness balances the wine's structure, making it very promising for ageing. Poggio Antico is renowned not only for the quality of its wines but also for its fascinating history. The estate is surrounded by breathtaking landscapes that offer spectacular views of the Tuscan hills. Additionally, the company has invested in sustainability and biodiversity within its vineyards, contributing to the preservation of the local environment.
