TASTING NOTES
Chianti Classico Riserva 2021 DOCG from Cafaggio is a Tuscan red wine made from 100% Sangiovese, produced by the Cafaggio estate in the renowned Conca d'Oro of Panzano in Chianti. This natural amphitheatre faces south-southeast between Greve and Panzano, at around 320 metres altitude, with well-drained galestro clay-limestone soils that impart minerality and longevity to the wine. The 2021 vintage in Chianti Classico was characterised by variable weather, with a cool and rainy spring followed by a warm summer balanced by beneficial rainfall, resulting in concentrated, fresh wines with lively acidity—ideal for ageing. While there are no specific scores yet for this 2021 Riserva, the estate has previously earned high ratings such as 92/100 from Falstaff and 90/100 from Wine Enthusiast for recent vintages. Visually, it displays an intense, bright ruby hue with garnet highlights emphasising its structure. On the nose, fragrant aromas of ripe cherries, blackberries, and plums are complemented by delicate spicy notes, leather, and a hint of vanilla—derived from 24 months ageing in 65-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks, concrete vats, and bottle maturation. On the palate, it is compact and balanced, featuring elegant, silky tannins and a surprising acidity that leads to a persistent, harmonious finish. This Riserva pairs perfectly with red meats, game, or matured cheeses. Alcohol content is 14%, best served at 18°C. Cafaggio, active since 1970, practices organic viticulture in this UNESCO-designated Chianti Classico area. A fun fact: the Conca d’Oro is famed for its unique microclimate that enhances the Sangiovese expression, making iconic wines like this Riserva both long-lived and truly representative of their terroir.
