TASTING NOTES
The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Vieilles Vignes 2023 from Domaine Bachey-Legros is an exemplary representation of white wines from the Côte de Beaune. Located in southern Burgundy, this region is renowned for its limestone and clay soils, which impart a unique mineral structure to the wines. The 2023 vintage was characterised by variable weather conditions, with a mild winter and cool spring followed by a warm and dry summer. These conditions favoured grape ripening, resulting in wines that balance freshness with complexity. The Côte de Beaune is noted for its limestone and clay soils, which are particularly suited to Chardonnay cultivation. The Morgeot cru's soil, rich in red clay and limestone, gives the wine a rounded and mineral structure. The "Les Petits Clos" vineyard parcel is situated at the heart of the appellation, benefiting from excellent east-west exposure and covering 2 hectares, the largest and most prestigious parcel of the domaine. Chardonnay is the primary grape variety used for white wines in the Côte de Beaune, valued for its versatility and ability to express the characteristics of the terroir in which it is grown. Old vines, such as those used for Morgeot Vieilles Vignes, produce grapes with a more complex aromatic profile and greater flavour concentration. The vines in this parcel were planted in 1950 and dig deep into the red clay-limestone soil, imparting the wine with the rounded character of great white wines, supported and balanced by a beautiful mineral structure. The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Vieilles Vignes 2023 is a white wine that benefits from the experience and tradition of Domaine Bachey-Legros. It is produced from hand-harvested grapes fermented in barrique for two months. The batonnages (lees stirring) are determined by tasting and monitoring the wine by the winemaker. The wine ages for 14 months: 12 months in barrique on lees without racking, followed by 2 months in a vat. It is produced 100% in oak barrels, with 30% new oak. The clarification is very gentle, using fining and lenticular filtration. Visually, it presents a light straw yellow colour that becomes golden with age. On the nose, it expresses floral, yellow fruit, and citrus aromas, with a light oak note and subtle vanilla undertones. On the palate, it is full-bodied and long, with a well-balanced mineral structure. The notes of ripe fruit and flowers are accompanied by a creamy sensation from aging on lees. The freshness and vivacity of the wine make it perfect for pairing with dishes like monkfish, lobster, or aged cheeses. Domaine Bachey-Legros is a family-owned estate spanning six generations across 18 hectares in Santenay, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Maranges. The estate is renowned for its dedication to cultivating old vines, which produce high-quality wines with unique personalities. Samuel and Lenaic, representing the sixth generation, skillfully and passionately manage the estate, paying particular attention to very old vines, some dating back to 1935-1955 and even up to 100 years old.
