TASTING NOTES
Chablis Vieilles Vignes 2023 produced by Domaine Michaut Frères represents an excellence of the Chablis wine region in Burgundy. This vintage has been characterised by favourable climatic conditions, leading to a high-quality harvest, although the region faced challenges in previous years with reduced yields. Chablis is renowned for its unique soils, primarily composed of Kimmeridgian clays, which impart a distinctive minerality and flinty character to the wines. The geographical position of the region, closer to Champagne than to the rest of Burgundy, significantly influences both the climate and the typicity of the wines. The vineyards of Domaine Michaut Frères are located in Béine, where the family has historical roots in viticulture dating back to the 1960s. The Chablis Vieilles Vignes is made entirely from Chardonnay grapes, which are perfectly suited to the terroir of Chablis. The older vines, from which the grapes for this wine are sourced, contribute to greater aromatic complexity and a deeper structure. Visually, it presents a bright straw-yellow colour, typical of high-quality Chardonnays. On the nose, it reveals mineral aromas accompanied by floral and citrus notes, with hints of green apple and ripe pear. This olfactory complexity reflects the influence of the terroir. On the palate, the wine is fresh and lively, with a crisp acidity that makes each sip refreshing. The minerality expresses itself in a long and persistent finish, making this wine extremely enjoyable to drink. Chablis Vieilles Vignes 2023 pairs beautifully with seafood dishes such as oysters and mussels, as well as with raw seafood platters and light risottos. It is also ideal with fresh cheeses or vegetarian dishes. Domaine Michaut Frères is managed by the third generation of the Michaut family, with Adrien Michaut at the helm since 2010. Under his guidance, the estate has adopted modern winemaking techniques while expanding its vineyards, always maintaining a strong connection to local tradition. The 2023 vintage has received positive reviews from industry critics, highlighting the freshness and balance of wines produced this season. While specific scores for this vintage are not yet available, expectations are high given the overall quality of Chablis wines from this year.
