TASTING NOTES
This 2023 Bolgheri Rosato is made from grapes grown in the vineyards of Donna Olimpia 1898 in Bolgheri (Li), on the Tyrrhenian coast, on sandy clay soils. The 2023 vintage was successful in Bolgheri, surpassing the previous year's 2022. Apart from reduced production due to persistent rainfall during the flowering and fruit set phases, which caused lower yields, the vintage was excellent in terms of quality. The grapes reached maturity with a perfect balance between technical and phenolic ripeness, and a moderate sugar supply. The grapes were healthy, with sufficient pulp and consistent skin, allowing for normal winemaking practices and the option of longer macerations. They were harvested at full ripeness towards the end of September and selected in the vineyard before being taken to the cellar for vinification. Following destemming and crushing, the must was cooled to around 10°C and left in contact with the skins for 12 hours. Once the desired colour intensity had been reached, selected yeasts were inoculated and fermentation began at a controlled temperature of 18°C. At the end of fermentation, the wine was racked and left to rest on the lees for at least 5 months before bottling. The colour of this rosé is a brilliant, soft salmon pink. It has light violet reflections. The nose is clean and broad with notes of rose, cherry, candy and small fruits. The palate is medium bodied and savoury with a pleasantly dry and floral finish.
ORIGIN OF THE NAME
The name of Donna Olimpia 1898 is in honor of Olimpia Alliata Signora di Biserno and bride of Gherardo della Gherardesca, who christened the Estate in 1898 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of their marriage.
