TASTING NOTES
The Carlo Boscaini winery is located in the hamlet of S. Ambrogio di Valpolicella, as known as the classic area, or the oldest area in which Amarone used to be produced. Winter 2016 was a season with average temperatures above the norm and also fairly dry, which favored the recovery of the vine with a slight advance. April and May, on the other hand, were cooler and rainier, and this restored the water balance of the soil and regulated the plants, leading to blooms in line with the averages of past years. A single hailstorm, far before veraison, affected only small portions in the higher altitude range, and therefore passed without causing damage. The hot, rainy but very windy summer ensured a slow ripening of the grapes harvested in mid-September. After a scrupulous selection, the best bunches were left to dry in the attic for a minimum of 90 days, followed by the classic alcoholic fermentation characterized by prolonged contact with the skins and temperature control. The subsequent period of evolution in wood was carried out in barrels of varying sizes between 1300 and 5000 liters. Amarone San Giorgio 2016 is characterized by an intense garnet color with ruby reflections, the nose reveals morello cherry, raspberry and blueberries, roses and violets, then again cigar tobacco and spicy spices. Wine of rank, which in the glass reveals race and remarkable structure, on the nose fresh fruit, which over time turns towards jam aromas, spicy tones, with hints of tobacco and a woody finish. Its extractive richness allows long periods of conservation that elevate complexity and sensations. It goes well with structured dishes, such as roasts, game, aged cheeses, braised meats. It should be served at room temperature, preferably placed in a carafe and decanted a few hours before.
