TASTING NOTES
Deep and powerful on the nose, this Bolgheri Rosso 2021 Donna Olimpia offers aromas of sweet berries and tobacco with hints of flowers, such as rose. Full-bodied, with firm, creamy tannins and a fresh finish. Best from 2024. The 2021 vintage was characterised by a mild and very wet winter, with temperatures only rarely touching 0°C. The frost at the beginning of April ruined the first buds, but the vines reacted well and, thanks to the correct interventions in the countryside and a stable and warm spring, recovered quickly. The summer was dry and well ventilated, but with temperatures that were not excessive, except for a few brief periods. The drought lasted almost uninterruptedly from mid-May until the harvest in mid-September, as is increasingly the case on this coast. The harvest took place at full ripeness between mid-September and mid-October. The grapes, selected in the vineyard, are then taken to the cellar to be vinified. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel wine vats, favouring prolonged contact of the skins with the must. Malolactic fermentation takes place immediately after alcoholic fermentation. Ageing is for 12-14 months in French oak barrels (50% new, 50% one year old) and 6 months in bottles. This magnum-size bottle is sold packaged in a case, making it perfect as a gift.
ORIGIN OF THE NAME
The name of Donna Olimpia 1898 is in honor of Olimpia Alliata Signora di Biserno and bride of Gherardo della Gherardesca, who christened the Estate in 1898 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of their marriage.
