TASTING NOTES
In a year as singular as Covid's 2020, the grape harvest was also rather peculiar in Burgundy, one of the legendary territories of the wine world. A vintage characterised by an advance in all the phenological phases of the vine, but also by water deficits and high temperatures, which marked important differences from area to area, resulting in a vintage that more than ever reflects the diversity of Burgundy. A harvest that required great patience and pragmatism in the vineyard, but which then, thanks to very healthy grapes, made things easier in the cellar. One imagines that 2020 will be a great vintage for ageing. Clos des Ormes is a prestigious Premier Cru in Morey-Saint-Denis. The vineyard is entirely planted with Pinot Noir and is known for its rich and structured wines with earthy and cherry characters. The three-hectare vineyard lies at the foot of the Côte d'Or slope, between the neighbouring Premier Cru vineyards of Aux Charmes to the north (with the Mazoyeres-Chambertin Grand Cru of Gevrey-Chambertin just beyond) and Les Charrières to the south. Clos des Ormes takes its name from the elms that once stood on the site and were much more common in this part of Burgundy. Clos des Ormes has a terroir with calcareous marly and rocky soils. These soils are draining and shallow, making them excellent for viticulture: vines that do not have easy access to water work harder to find it and conserve their energy to produce small, quality berries rather than leafy vegetation. Crimson colour with slightly light highlights. Aroma of great complexity: in general, fruit aromas dominate during youth, then smoky notes take over. The spicy tones that emerge during ageing give it a special character, rare in the Côte de Nuits. To be drunk from 2029 to 2042.
