TASTING NOTES
During the winter of 2020, the climate was mild and rainy, with temperatures rarely close to 0 ° C. A nationwide lockdown was imposed in March but the buds took their time and blossomed in the last week of the month, thus giving time to prepare and organize to operate safely. From April to the end of May the weather was perfect, with hot and mostly dry days, while June was rather rainy, with the development of the vine accelerating. Hot and dry July, a fundamental condition for the triggering of the veraison which developed promptly and slowly towards the end of the month. In August, temperatures increased further, for a total of 47 days above 30 ° C for the whole season, with frequent peaks of 36 ° / 37 ° C which made this summer in fact comparable to that of 2015. Fortunately, the high Temperatures Daytime temperatures at night dropped below 20 ° C, allowing the grapes to develop their aromatic potential and maintain good acidity. In the last days of August, the rains arrived in time to relieve excess water stress and lower temperatures. In mid-September a sudden heat wave increased sugar levels but a few rainy days interrupted the harvest and rebalanced the plants, guaranteeing sugary and colorless clusters. Deep and powerful on the nose this Bolgheri Rosso 2020 Donna Olimpia offers aromas of sweet berries and tobacco with hints of flowers, such as rose. Full-bodied, with firm, creamy tannins and a fresh finish. Better from 2023. The harvest takes place at full ripeness between mid-September and mid-October. The grapes, selected in the vineyard, are then taken to the cellar to be vinified. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature, favoring prolonged contact of the skins with the must. Malolactic fermentation occurs immediately after alcoholic fermentation. Aging is 12-14 months in French oak barrels (50% new, 50% one year) and 6 months in bottle.

Donna Olimpia 1898

Donna Olimpia 1898 Discover Tenuta Donna Olimpia 1898 in Tuscany and its fine wines in our online store Of ancient and noble origins, the Donna Olimpia 1898 estate was baptized in the same year in honor of Olimpia Alliata, Lady of Biserno and wife of Gherardo della Gherardesca on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of their wedding. Located in the heart of Bolgheri , in the province of Livorno, spread over 60 hectares, 45 of which are new vineyards planted following a study on clones and rootstocks. The vines planted are obviously those whose vocation has been widely demonstrated: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot; for white wines, on the other hand, Vermentino, Viognier and Petit Manseng. Gifts of a unique territory, Donna Olimpia 1898's wines are characterized by their minerality, harmonic structure and intrinsic elegance. The estate boasts a modern cellar of 5000 square meters, designed to maximize energy savings and minimize environmental impact. It is equipped with the best available production technology, but still the aging in wood takes place in French oak barriques, so traditional. The barrel room is certainly the most important and evocative environment of the entire wine estate.
