TASTING NOTES
This Bolgheri Rosato 2022 is made from grapes grown in the vineyards of Donna Olimpia 1898 in Bolgheri (Li), located on the coastal strip of the Tyrrhenian Sea lying on sandy loam soil. The seasonal trend of 2022 was not easy to manage in the Bolgheri DOC territory. Spring, after the previous five years that had been characterised by frosts, was finally mild. The summer was very hot and dry. The drought lasted almost uninterruptedly from April until August, as is often the case in this area. In 2022, in contrast to the previous year, rains arrived, which often cooled down and gave some water in the later part of the summer. Thanks to delayed pruning and tillage to counteract grassing, it was possible to delay the harvest slightly and thus allow the plants to benefit from the rains. The harvest took place at full ripeness towards the end of September. The grapes, selected in the vineyard, were taken to the cellar to be vinified. After destemming-crushing, the must, previously cooled to around 10° C, remained in contact with the skins for 12 hours. Once the desired colour intensity was reached, selected yeasts were inoculated and fermentation was carried out at a controlled temperature of 18° C. Once fermentation was complete, an initial racking was carried out and then the wine was left to age sur lie for at least 5 months before bottling. This rosé has a brilliant, soft salmon-pink colour with slight violet reflections. The nose is clean and broad with notes of rose, cherry, candy and small fruits. In the mouth it is medium-bodied and savoury, with a pleasantly dry and floral finish.
ORIGIN OF THE NAME
The name of Donna Olimpia 1898 is in honor of Olimpia Alliata Signora di Biserno and bride of Gherardo della Gherardesca, who christened the Estate in 1898 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of their marriage.
