La Crema

Willamette Valley, Oregon
Pinot Noir 100%
Traveling 120 miles from north to south, from Portland to Eugene, Oregon's Willamette Valley AVA is located in the northwestern corner of the state. The region is known for producing unique wines that strike a balance between New World and Old World expressions. With a maritime-influenced Mediterranean climate and diverse soil types, it is not surprising that the Willamette Valley is now recognized as one of the world's premier Pinot Noir growing regions. Fruit comes from nine vineyards and six sub-appellations in the Willamette Valley. The year 2021 in the Willamette Valley is considered by many to be an exceptional year. The winter was relatively dry, with average temperatures above normal. An erratic weather pattern followed with gales and rain during flowering followed by record heat in June. Early September rains gave the vines the water they needed and extended the ripening time, thus creating concentrated aromas and preserving juicy acidity. The clusters were picked and sorted by hand. Some of the grapes were destemmed, some were not, and they were cold macerated at 8°C for 2-4 days. Fermentation followed with cap management 2 times a day with both punching down and pumping over depending on the stage of winemaking. After fermentation, the wine was decanted for a minimum of two days before being racked into French oak barrels of which 20% were new and the remainder used. Here the wine matures for at least 6 months. No racking from the barrels until blending before bottling. This 2021 Pinot Noir shows savory notes of violets complemented by initial notes of raspberries, cranberries and orange zest. Soft tannins give the wine complexity and length.
